Retired Air Traffic Controller Just Like A Regular Only Way Happier T-Shirt

I used to be an air traffic controller at a military airport for a brief period. In addition to controlling air and ground traffic, air traffic controllers control ground crews, and that was one of my certifications. While civilian and military airports do have their differences, there’s one thing in common – Aviation firefighters have a very different job from “regular” firefighters. Most of their job in fact is not fighting fires. You are right. There are hardly any crashes ever. However there are plenty of issues (especially with older airplanes). Aviation would rather err on the safe side in virtually all cases, so a ground crew is dispatched to standby by the airstrip. Depending on the nature of the issue it could be firefighters, paramedics, rescue crew, and various others. 9999 times out of 10000 the aircraft lands safely, everything is nice and dandy, and the ground crews go back to their departments (and sometimes complain about having to rush to the airstrip over a non-issue). But that one time when something does happen – definitely makes it all worth it. Yeah, but how often does a call happen? You’d be surprised. It depends on the age and quality of the aircraft, and the traffic at the airport. Such events may happen nearly every day. Sometimes even multiple in one day! Aviation firefighters are actually pretty busy people. Sometimes they even go out of the airport to help the “regular” firefighters if a particularly troublesome fire happens. Sure, but what do they do when not dispatched? They mostly sit and wait, staring blankly in to the distance. Just kidding, they’re humans too. (but for most of them we likely only hear about them in our trade journals as opposed to the national media). One of the problems that can arise in situations like this is that state law often dictates who is in charge at vehicle accident scenes. Some states say the fire department is in charge while some states say that law enforcement is. So, if you’re in a state that says that the accident scene you’re currently working on is controlled by law enforcement…they’re in charge. Period. That being said, the police officer in the most recent video I saw on the news was and is an idiot. In my job, I work very closely with police officer and police chiefs and when these sorts of things happen it really frustrates all of us. Unless the firefighter in question just threatened the police officer or shoved him or something (which admittedly, we don’t know *everything* that occurred prior him being handcuffed), it makes no sense to arrest the guy in front of TV cameras. You get your supervisor involved with the FD officer in charge, you do everything you can to keep from escalating the situation. If I was this cop’s supervising officer, I’d have him in my office the next day chewing his ass like it had never been chewed before. (but for most of them we likely only hear about them in our trade journals as opposed to the national media). One of the problems that can arise in situations like this is that state law often dictates who is in charge at vehicle accident scenes. Some states say the fire department is in charge while some states say that law enforcement is. So, if you’re in a state that says that the accident scene you’re currently working on is controlled by law enforcement…they’re in charge. Period. That being said, the police officer in the most recent video I saw on the news was and is an idiot. In my job, I work very closely with police officer and police chiefs and when these sorts of things happen it really frustrates all of us. Unless the firefighter in question just threatened the police officer or shoved him or something (which admittedly, we don’t know *everything* that occurred prior him being handcuffed), it makes no sense to arrest the guy in front of TV cameras. You get your supervisor involved with the FD officer in charge, you do everything you can to keep from escalating the situation.
