Megan Thee Stallion embraced a bold purple manicure moment with intricate spider detail, while photographer Esther Faciane captured a “Sunday nail selfie” with a pastel French-tipped design embellished with smiley faces and Nike swooshes. In the same standout beauty spirit, there was colorful hair galore. Looking pretty in pink, Junglepussy wore a neon-bright mullet, while Lana Condor sported a new bubblegum-hued ’do. As for Ravyn Lenae? She wore a striking, red-hot set of straight-back cornrows. And the rich color didn’t end there.Model Roseline Lawrence showed off saturated strokes of bright blue shadow on her lids, pairing her eye makeup with a chic bob and blush-swirled cheeks. Rosalía opted for a more neutral look with a sandy smoky eye and face-framing waves, while Hanahana Beauty founder Abena Boamah reflected on the past month with a serious glow. “Manuka honey really is that girl and homemade sage is top-tier,” she captioned her February wellness favorites. Finally, Aoki Lee Simmons shared some very zen yoga photos. “I can do anything I want and so can you,” she wrote in the caption. “That limitless potential energy.”Lila Robles, aka @nailjerks, creates the type of art that stops you mid-scroll. Her medium is manicures, with airbrushed nails featuring intricate detailing that is nostalgic and romantic, yet retains an edge. Which is why her work, unsurprisingly, has already caught the attention of brands like Sephora and KVD Beauty, singer Kali Uchis, and rapper Leikeli47.Robles was drawn to airbrushing at a young age—she saw it on the low riders passing through her hometown of San Jose, California and the t-shirts being sold at the county fair. “Before I started doing nails, I went to school for graphic design, and my very first art purchase was an airbrush kit,” she tells Vogue. In 2009, Robles was looking for a creative outlet that would allow her to “connect more with people and myself.” She started to invest in getting her nails done, which grew quickly beyond a routine pampering session into a deeply-rooted passion. Hours of surfing the web to find inspiration and artists she could follow eventually led her to M.I.S.S., an online women’s magazine founded by Gabriella Khorasanee and stylist Liz Baca. They shared her love of “weird nail art and would create nail calendars with dead stock sneakers,” Robles remembers.Shortly after connecting with Khorasanee and Baca, Robles decided turn her passion into a career. She began interning for M.I.S.S., helping them create nail art for shoots and writing as one of the main columnists on their site, while attending school to be a manicurist.  In 2014 she received her license, and started working for a San Francisco-based salon that same year.Fast forward to 2021 and Robles is now an independent nail artist, traveling across the country to create custom designs for a list of devout clientele, collaborating on shoots that span beauty and television (13 Reasons Why), and teaching private classes to aspiring artists. When it comes to her aesthetic, more is more. “I like bright colors and I like a lot of depth and variation,” she says. “And I love to layer, like creating bubbles for the background and then going back to top it off with charms.” Robles’s inspiration spans “bootleg Patrick Nagel salon window posters and Japanese artist Pater Sato to fellow airbrush artists Malcolm Stuart, Daniel Barrigas, Everett Regua and the early nail designs where you would get sunsets or your name written across in script.” To create the sharp lines she’s known for, she uses the Nail Labo’s AIRTEX airbrush gel system. Her love of bold, colorful makeup is deeply rooted in her heritage. “Growing up xicanx has definitely inspired me,” Robles says. “I’d listen to freestyle music like Stevie B, my first bicycle was a low rider that my uncle gifted me. I loved the interchangeable custom upgrades you could add on which would then lead me to muscles cars and eventually nails. For me, it’s all one in the same—building and customizing until you create something that is uniquely yours.”Seeing the industry embrace the beauty she grew up around has been powerful. “It’s part of our heritage—the long nails, having your boyfriend’s name on your nail or shirt,” she says, “and it’s really cool that the editorial space is branching out to let people express and celebrate their style, along with the history that comes with it. It shows people another side of what nail art, or art in general, can be.”Major lip accents filled the feeds of Instagram this past week. Erykah Badu rocked a bold, gold lip cuff ahead of a Facebook performance; Kerry Washington sported her signature red lip with bouncy curls; and Judas and the Black Messiah star Dominique Fishback channeled her inner Brooklyn princess with cherry red lipstick and braids that fell into soft waves. On the hair front, Taraji P. Henson embraced a fiery mane that looked all the more fierce cast in a sunlit glow, while Rowan Blanchard wore blunt bangs and pigtails. And serving up an extra dose of chic, Tianna St. Louis and Maty Fall Diba—alongside fellow glowing runway stars Akon Changkou and Ajok Madel—sported sleek, straight back cornrows at Fendi’s fall show.In the spirit of staying active, model Yoon Young Bae enjoyed a Pilates session, Myha’la Herrold shared a post-pole session selfie, and Carolyn Murphy stayed motivated for her Monday yoga session. “I do not feel motivated, but then again, just do it,” wrote Murphy, offering up a reminder to keep it moving in whatever way feels good to you. Throughout her meteoric rise, Megan Thee Stallion has made no secret of her long-standing passion for anime. The Houston rapper has cosplayed My Hero Academia’s Shoto Todoroki, name-checked Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z characters while freestyling, and served up an array of Instagram-breaking, anime-inspired manicures. The visionary responsible for the latter is none other than London-born, Los Angeles-based manicurist Coca Michelle, Megan’s key nail artist, who’s a go-to for many of today’s chart-toppers—including Cardi B, Rosalía, and Jhené Aiko—for her bold and bedazzled claw creations executed in exhaustive detail.Born and raised in East London, Michelle began doing nails at the age of six. “While I was growing up, my parents worked for a hole-in-the-wall nail salon and then my father opened a salon,” she explains. “I wasn’t able to have someone to take care of me, so I was just always in that environment and picked the skill up.” But while her craft was cultivated at an early age, it wasn’t until she moved to the states to attend college at L.A.’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and began working at Laqué Nail Bar, where she relished being given complete creative freedom, even as a manicurist just starting out. “Through word of mouth, I ended up meeting my first celebrity client, Teyana Taylor,” she explains. “I toured with her and that’s where things took off.”In 2018, Michelle and Taylor went on to launch Junie Bee Nails, a ’90s-themed nail salon in Harlem that offered everything from the decade’s tell-tale airbrush nails to elaborate Swarovski-embellished claws. (Shortly before the pandemic, which forced the salon to close, Michelle amicably parted ways with the business.) Another standout career moment was joining forces with visual artist, photographer, and close friend Ro.lexx for Summer Walker’s Over It album cover, where she gave the Atlanta singer a set of fluorescent pink, cherry-emblazoned stiletto tips. “I love doing things that are organic and allow me to work with people in the industry that are super grounded,” she explains of finding like-minded collaborators. “I feel like it keeps me in touch with my roots, you know, just being from a mom-and-pop type of environment.”Needless to say, Michelle has found a natural collaborator in Megan Thee Stallion. One of their standout moments was on set for Megan’s Rolling Stone cover alongside SZA and Normani, where Michelle gave her an express set of glittering lipstick-shaped claws. “They were like, ‘Hey Coca, you have like 14 minutes to create a look. And I [told Megan], ‘All right, let me just chop your coffin up and we’ll just create this new look for you. She was down and that’s when I knew, This is going to be my partner in crime.” Then there was Megan’s already-iconic “WAP” video, where Michelle gave her a duo of striking square-shaped talons; one pale yellow, coordinated to her Nicolas Jebran look; the other a gleaming silver set peeking out from her long purple fingerless gloves. From some sweet sunny day moments to out-of-the-box accessorizing, this week’s best beauty Instagrams were something of a celebration. Alicia Keys’s bare-faced fitness snap lived up to its caption, while Kaia Gerber welcomed April’s warm weather with a backyard bikini session, featuring a mussed chop, diminutive tattoos, and an appearance by an adorable puppy. For Ciara, a mane of “Farah Fawcett” blonde waves called for metallic lids, smoked-out liner, and a series of high-drama snaps. In the playful camp, Salem Mitchell coupled a bun of baby box braids with a quartet of face-framing plaits, sweet accessories, and a glassy pout. Imaan Hammam did her best in bridal beauty, a shimmering white veil secured with flowers and left to fall over her sleek midi-knot and glowing complexion, as elsewhere, Niharika Chandrasekar pulled gold liner into a graphic cat-eye elevated by a touch of strategically placed crimson. And for Laura Harrier, Earth Week called for a duet of al fresco selfies, her air-dried curls mimicking a backdrop of twisting branches, proving that often, the best beauty inspiration comes from Mother Earth herself. “I wanted to something designed specifically for artist needs, but that still looked beautiful to wear when not working,” says editorial nail artist Betina Goldstein of the latest offering from her luxe tool brand Doublemoss Arte. Called The Artist Palette Ring, it became an instant Instagram sensation since its launch just over a week ago.Made locally in Los Angeles, the solid brass, sculptural golden bauble features a flat plane canvas with two wells for housing nail polish, eyelash glue, or various eye and lip pigments based on your beauty needs. “While your hand is on an angle, the grooves serve as a resting place for individual lashes and help slow down any dripping of liquid-based products,” explains Goldstein of the ring’s ergonomic design, which works in tandem with precision brushes, such as her gilded Primero set, to make small, detailed touch-ups a (mess free!) cinch. “The ring’s sidewall is thin enough to catch any product that may drip out of the well, adding extra protection to keep the product off of your hand while moving around.” The shank of the ring is adjustable so that it’s one size that fits most, and artists can change the size as needed to be comfortable in all situations. Another crucial part of the design was using the highest quality brass so that you can effectively use alcohol or acetone to clean the product off of the palette. While the Artist Palette ring boasts sheer objet d’art beauty, ultimately it was Goldstein’s answer to the unique challenges artists face working on editorial and campaign photoshoots. “As a nail artist, I am usually working alongside hair and makeup to get the talent ready quickly to be on camera,” she explains. “More often than not, we are in a confined space with not much table area available for us to use. I would try everything from using my glove to the lid of a disposable coffee cup as my palette. This was not only messy, but not sustainable.” For Goldstein’s fellow pros, her innovative solution is a thrilling game-changer.”I am really excited about it because it’s so rare to see new and innovative products in the beauty market,” says celebrity makeup artist Sandy Ganzer, who was drawn not just to the ring’s sheer beauty, but its convenience on set—especially during the pandemic where special safety protocols are in place. “As makeup artists, pre-COVID-19 we’d all just used the backs of our hands out of convenience, and this is a chic and hygienic alternative,” explains Ganzer. “I can see myself using this for lip and concealer touch-ups constantly.” Ganzer is also excited about Doublemoss Arte’s next launch, the Artist Palette Cuff, which is currently in design and will cover the top of your hand “almost like hand armor,” says Goldstein, adding that it will offer even more space to work with, and thus find broader appeal among makeup artists. When director Lee Daniels set out to make The United States vs. Billie Holiday, a new Hulu biopic that will premiere on February 26 about the legendary “Lady Day,” adapted from Chasing the Scream, Johann Hari’s 2015 book about the war on drugs, he certainly wasn’t trying to cast anyone with no previous acting experience. “Many people told me to meet with Andra because she is a singer and her last name is Day. But I hate doing what other people say,” Daniels jokes of his initial talent search for Holiday, the unsung civil rights activist speaking truth to power with her chill-inducing vocals. But he was smitten by Day, the 36-year-old, Los Angeles–based R&B singer whose impressive performance is fueled by raw talent, one that has now gotten her two Golden Globe nominations—one for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama and the other for Best Song. “I’m so grateful for the recognition. I’m just enjoying this moment,” Day tells Vogue. “During filming, the idea of being nominated wasn’t even in my mind. I mean, I was terrified; it was my first time acting. I wanted to be great. Really, really great…not for an award, but for Billie Holiday, for Lee Daniels, and for my cast who showed up with so much passion. You know what I mean?”“It was so uncanny. She was able to easily drop into these levels of Billie’s personality, whether sober or high,” Daniels says of Day’s performance. The transformation was aided by Day’s out-of-this-world voice—and, of course, some very good hair and makeup. “It was a pretty significant transformation,” Day reveals of the process of getting into character, which included cutting off her hip-length hair. “There was something so liberating about that process of cutting it, though.” Day also wore brown contact lenses, and lost almost 40 pounds to effectively convey Holiday’s struggle with addiction as she is pursued by the FBI.Billie HolidayThe “Strange Fruit” singer’s signature deep-red lipstick was reimagined as a “true red” by makeup artist Laini Thompson, thanks to Film Noir by Julie Hewett and MAC’s Ruby Woo liner. “If there’s one thing I learned about Billie through this film, it’s that she always wanted to look put together, no matter what she was going through,” Thompson says. Whether she was performing, reaching for nail polish while on her hospital bed, or being tracked down by federal agents, “she loved her furs, diamonds, and lingerie.”Day’s updos and ponytails achieved an extra-dark sheen thanks to Skin Illustrator palettes applied by stylist Stacie Merriman, while other times a simple grease was used by the late, great hairstylist Charles Gregory Ross. “He was magical like that. He always had what we needed without me having to ask,” Daniels recalls fondly of Ross.Day ultimately enjoyed the glamorous transformation, she says. “I tried to live in that space,” she explains of the all-in approach that saw her pick up a smoking habit, as well as sexier ones like a taste for vintage lingerie, nail polish, and Lentheric’s woodsy-musk Tweed, a discontinued fragrance beloved by Holiday that helped inform the name of the film’s theme song, “Tigress & Tweed,” written by Day and Raphael Saadiq. Day keeps the scent in a vintage flacon as a tribute to Holiday. “She told stories with her voice, which has helped me to own my own,” Day says. “We felt her spirit and presence on set. And I still do. She is here, sitting with me now, and I just love everything about her.” Product detail for this product: Fashion field involves the best minds to carefully craft the design. Jessica Wu, press director of Peter Do and founder of period empowerment organization Period Space, shared a “sun-drenched” selfie that highlighted her peachy lips and cheeks, as well as a ray-catching highlight. But we have a light. And we must never dim that light for anyone or anything.”View on InstagramThis past week on Instagram, auburn-tinged strands served up much spring hair inspiration. British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks shared a glowing selfie with a citrus crop alongside the poems and visuals that have been filling her with joy lately. Similarly, Justine Skye rocked a curly tangerine-hued updo while dreaming of a vacation to Jamaica. “My backyard will do for now,” she wrote in her caption. Adding more hair inspiration to the mix was Tracee Ellis Ross with her buoyant “cloud hair” and model-DJ Soo Joo Park, who sported her signature two-toned bleached hair with a set of face-framing braids.Similarly, a lot of creativity was channeled into eye makeup. Model Roseline Lawrence made the case for electric blue liner, pairing it with bubble gum pink blush and her infectious smile; Imaan Hammam opted for thick kohl liner with a very sleek updo; and Barbie Ferreira embraced a smoky eye and a terra-cotta lipstick. What an honor to be a woman.”View on InstagramThe past week on Instagram was filled with major nail moments.
